Methods
(14 points)
The method should include explicit reference to how the control of variables is achieved. If the control of variables is not practically possible, some effort should be made to monitor the variable(s)." IB Internal Assessment Online Workshop, 2009
Use complete sentences to describe what you did
to perform the experiment.State all necessary safety precautions first.
Design a realistic and appropriate method to collect sufficient relevant data.
Methods must be in past tense, prose form or as directed by your instructor.
All variables must be effectively controlled. This refers to the how complete your methods are designed, implemented and written. Think to yourself - "Did I leave anything out that was done?"
Maintain controlled variables and constants. If you used the same amount of a material or chemical each time, then state the amount used and indicate the amount as a constant for the experiment.
Other experimenters should be able to repeat the experiment and get the same results. This means your methods should be written in such a way that someone else who has never seen the equipment or this experiment could re-run your experiment.
Clearly state the experimental set-up and measurement techniques
Include at least one colored, labeled drawing of how the equipment was put together and/or used. Drawings must have their own title and be labeled figure 1, figure 2 and so on. Drawings must be a minimum of 12 cm by 12 cm. DO NOT draw the individual pieces of equipment used - doing so will result in a loss of credit for this section. The drawing or diagram is to clearly show how the equipment was put together to run the experiment. Label lines are to be horizontal or vertical only - NO diagonal label lines. NO arrow heads on label lines.
Labeled diagram or labeled photograph. Other diagrams maybe added for clarity. These could include a diagram of the result if during the experiment some visible change occurred. Examples could be the change of color for an indicator. NOTE: all criteria listed above for equipment set up diagrams apply here.
You are NOT to use pronouns, in particular the pronoun "it." No credit will be given for the use of the pronoun "it." In addition, whenever possible, choose active verbs instead of passive ones.
